Five years from now we’ll all be controlling our model train sets with our brain waves. If that sounds a little Philip K. Dick, Hitachi has spent big bucks making it so, and now has an optical topography based system that translates brain blood flow associated with mental activity into voltage signals for controlling external devices. In other words, it deduces what you’re thinking about and reconfigures your gadgets accordingly. It’ll be a few years before it hits the market commercially but the potential for demonstrating, say, whether or not Terri Schiavo is still alive in there is pretty interesting. (Or lying in bed thinking, “God, I wish I had coffee.”) [GT]
